Mumbai Gears Up For Country’s Largest Sari Walkathon On Dec 10
In a bid to promote the rich handloom sari culture of India and celebrate the country’s “Unity in Diversity,” Union Minister of State for Textiles, Darshana Jardosh, inaugurated the e-registration portal for the Sari Walkathon on 21st November, 2023. The event, scheduled for December 10, 2023, will take place at MMRDA Ground in Mumbai.
The dedicated portal allows women from various states to participate in the Sari Walkathon, showcasing their unique ways of wearing saris. Jardosh, leading by example, became the first to register on the portal. The initiative aims to present India’s cultural diversity while emphasizing the spirit of “Vocal for Local.”
The first Sari Walkathon held in Surat saw the participation of over 15,000 women draped in various saris, promoting fitness and traditional textiles. Building on this success, Mumbai is gearing up to host the country’s largest-ever Sari Walkathon, organized by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
Approximately 10,000 women from across the country are expected to join the event, showcasing their distinctive traditional attire. The gathering will be a vibrant tapestry featuring enthusiastic participants, as well as notable figures from diverse fields, including celebrities, influential personalities, fashion designers and committed Anganwadi workers.
The event aims not only to promote cultural diversity and empowerment but also to raise awareness about fitness among women, encouraging them to lead healthier lives through the traditional art of donning saris.
