Proposal Mooted For Tripartite Committee To Fix Yarn Prices

Tiruppur based garment exporters have suggested forming a tripartite committee made up of garment units, yarn mills and the state government to review and fix yarn prices for a three-month period, in a bid to overcome fluctuation of yarn prices.

“Unstable cotton yarn prices are derailing deals of many garment units. While cotton prices change every day, the price of yarn rises every month,” Tiruppur Exporters and Manufacturer Association (TEAMA) President MP Muthurathinam told TNIE.

“The prices of semi-combed and combed yarn in all counts rose by Rs 12 per kg last month. This month, they once more grew by Rs 5,” he said.

“Because of such fluctuations, garment factories cannot finalise deals with buyers. So we suggest that price should be fixed once in three months and we will be sending this proposal to the state textile department for their consideration,” Muthurathinam informed.

South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association (SIHMA) Vice President S Govindappan also said that it will be useful if there is a price fixation committee.
