Selenis Innovates High-Quality rPET Using Circ’s Recovered Terephthalic Acid

Selenis has achieved a significant milestone by successfully producing recycled PET chips using terephthalic acid supplied by Circ®, a leading textile-to-textile recycler based in Virginia. The production took place through a successful multiple-batch campaign at Selenis’ pilot plant in San Giorgio, Italy. Utilizing inputs recovered from polycotton textile waste, Selenis has transformed these into high-quality PET chips, subsequently producing DTY yarn for upcoming product developments as Circ prepares for additional capsule launches.

“The synthesis of monomers performed comparably to virgin terephthalic acid,” stated Eduardo Santos, Head of Corporate Strategy at Selenis. “These findings underscore the consistent quality of Circ’s monomer output, boding well for future commercial success.”

Selenis, a global leader in sustainable polyester solutions, is a subsidiary of IMG Group with over sixty-five years of industry expertise. This collaboration with Circ reinforces Selenis’ commitment to sustainability, allowing them to produce PTA from Circ’s recovered terephthalic acid and bio-monoethylene glycol (Bio-MEG) from second-generation biobased sources. Their goal is to eliminate plastic waste and reduce carbon footprints by transforming waste into high-quality products repeatedly.

Circ leads in blended textile-to-textile recycling, aiming to tackle the challenge of separating polycotton blended textile waste and recovering both cellulosic and synthetic fibers.
