Shortage Of Textile Dyes Impacts Nigerian Uniforms Industry

Nigerian textile and garment manufacturers are complaining about a shortage of textile disperse dyes to dye polyester fabrics, which is forcing garment factories to import polyester fabrics.

The polyester fabric which is mainly used to produce school and various other uniforms has raised apprehensions that the cost of manufacturing uniforms will increase

“This situation is very concerning. We are struggling to produce uniforms and the cost of uniforms is most likely going to shoot up,” media reports stated quoting a uniforms manufacturer.

The uniforms producer added that this is forcing them to import dyed polyester fabrics, which is increasing their cost as well as leading to outgo of precious foreign exchange.

“We buy these fabrics from a factory in our state and the textile dyes shortage has led to fabric deliveries not being done as per schedule since the last few months,” the garment producer stated.

Another company lamented the fact that the textile and garment industry which used to thrive in Nigeria is now rotting as a majority of companies have closed down due to government apathy.

The company official also lamented that fact that the industry has to import several textile raw materials which used to be produced in the country earlier.
