Sierra Leone Launches Fashion, Design and Textiles Association

On 13 June 2024, Sierra Leone launched the Fashion, Design and Textiles Association, an event hosted by the British High Commissioner and supported by Invest Salone, a UK-funded initiative. The event united key stakeholders to reveal the Association’s vision for the industry.

Globally, the fashion and textiles sector is valued at US$2.5 trillion and employs over 75 million workers, predominantly women. In sub-Saharan Africa, the market is worth US$31 billion and is expected to grow by 4–5% annually through 2027. While Sierra Leone’s industry is smaller compared to regional leaders like Nigeria and Ghana, it has significant potential for growth and international competitiveness.

British High Commissioner Lisa Chesney MBE expressed her support: “A vibrant creative industry centered around fashion and textiles can unlock economic growth and create opportunities for all. This new national association marks a significant step towards amplifying Sierra Leone’s creative capabilities.”

Frederica Williams, President of the Association, emphasized the industry’s progress: “Sierra Leone’s fashion, design, and textiles have been making visible and sustainable progress. The Association demonstrates our potential as creatives, innovators, and a source of economic growth. We aim to shape the evolution of our industry both locally and internationally.”

Avril Pratt, a consultant with Invest Salone, highlighted the sector’s promise: “Sierra Leone’s designers are punching above their weight. We are excited to support the Association in its launch.” She noted that research identified enhancing shipping, developing skills, strengthening supply chains, and promoting an enabling environment as priorities.

The launch included a panel discussion on industry opportunities and challenges and a pop-up exhibition showcasing Sierra Leonean designers’ work.
