Sri Lanka EDB Organises Workshop To Boost Global Reach Of Creative Textiles

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, recently organized a workshop at EDB head office to strengthen the international visibility of Sri Lanka’s creative textile sector, with a focus on handloom and batik industries.
The programme aimed to raise awareness among government institutions about both domestic and global market opportunities and to facilitate easier access for creative textile products to international markets.
Industry leaders and experts shared their knowledge during the sessions. Darshi Kirthisena, CEO of Buddhi Batiks, spoke on “Presenting Batik Products to the Modern Fashion Market,” while Dr. G. Nilantha Roshan Perera of the University of Kelaniya delivered insights on “Developing a Global Textile Brand,” highlighting the role of branding, positioning and storytelling.
Export success stories were showcased by Loom & Bean (ApiHappi) co-founders Itosha Lankathilaka and Aparna Samarakoon, demonstrating how traditional Sri Lankan designs can achieve international appeal. Contributions from Dr. Thushari Vanniarachchi of the University of Moratuwa and Sarath Wijayabahu of SLITA emphasized collaboration, innovation, skills training and certification for the sector’s growth.
The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, SLITA, and EDB, alongside provincial industry directors and textile centre managers.
By bridging Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage with global fashion trends, the initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing exports, fostering sustainable livelihoods, and strengthening the country’s international presence in creative textiles
