Switzerland Retains Title Of World’s Most Innovative Economy In GII 2025

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has once again ranked Switzerland as the world’s most innovative country in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, marking the 15th consecutive year the country has held the top position.

Published annually by WIPO, the Global Innovation Index evaluates the innovation performance of 139 economies using nearly 80 indicators that measure both innovation inputs and outputs across sectors such as research, infrastructure, business sophistication and creative production. The report highlights Switzerland’s exceptional ability to transform innovation investments into high-quality outcomes.

“Switzerland leads high-income economies in the transformation of innovation inputs into exceptional outputs,” the GII 2025 report notes.

Switzerland ranked 1st overall, 1st in innovation outputs and 2nd in innovation inputs, reinforcing its position as a global innovation powerhouse. The country also leads the world in creative outputs, reflecting strong performance in areas such as intellectual property, digital creativity and global brand value.

In the latest rankings, Sweden secured the second position, followed by the United States in third place. Among major economies, China ranked 10th, while Japan placed 12th.

The report also highlights Switzerland’s strong innovation ecosystem, driven by robust research and development investment, close collaboration between universities and industry and a high concentration of knowledge-intensive jobs. Key innovation strengths include leading rankings in ICT access, intellectual property receipts and GitHub commits per capita, reflecting the country’s strong digital and knowledge economy.

The GII, produced by WIPO, a specialized agency of the United Nations has become a globally recognised benchmark for measuring innovation performance and guiding national innovation strategies. By consistently topping the rankings since 2011, Switzerland continues to set the benchmark for innovation-driven economic development worldwide.
