Textile Leaders Unite For Sustainability At IIT Delhi
The North India Section of The Textile Institute (NISTI), in collaboration with the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering, IIT Delhi, hosted the Conference on Sustainability in Textiles & Clothing on December 14, 2024, at IIT Delhi. This milestone event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academicians, researchers, and students to explore innovative pathways toward a sustainable textile future.
The conference was inaugurated by Roop Rashi, IA & AS, Textile Commissioner, Government of India, whose keynote address highlighted the significance of policy-driven initiatives and collaboration in achieving sustainability in the textile sector. She commended the platform for fostering connections between thought leaders, industry pioneers, and young innovators.
Special addresses by esteemed Guests of Honour enriched the proceedings:
- R. Alagirusamy, Head, Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering, IIT Delhi, emphasized academia’s role in developing cutting-edge sustainable technologies.
- Anil Jain, Chairman, Jain Cord Industries Pvt Ltd., shared industry perspectives on resource-efficient practices.
- RK Vij, General Secretary, Polyester Textile Apparel Industry Association, stressed the importance of industry-wide collaborations to achieve sustainability goals.
Dr. RA Lal, Chairman of NISTI, in his welcome address, highlighted the importance of academia-industry partnerships in accelerating the transition to a sustainable and circular textile ecosystem.
A poster presentation session showcased research from 20 students across India on sustainability and innovation. Their creativity and technical depth impressed attendees, with winners celebrated for their outstanding contributions.
The conference recognized the exceptional contributions of visionary leaders in the textile field with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Honourees included:

- Sailen Chaudhury
- Vinod Shanbhag
- Vijay Bhalla
- Kuldip Sharma
These stalwarts’ efforts in advancing textile research, innovation, and education inspired all present.
The event featured innovative designs and products from Covation Biomaterials LLC and JS Institute of Design students. Covation Biomaterials showcased biomaterial-based solutions for textiles, while the students exhibited creative and sustainable textile products, reflecting their commitment to sustainable fashion.
Special recognition was extended to sponsors, including Grasim Industries, Birla Cellulose, RSWM Limited, Covation Biomaterials LLC, and others, for their invaluable support. The organizing team and volunteers were also commended for their dedication and meticulous planning.
Dr. Abhijit Mazumdar summarized the proceedings, emphasizing actionable outcomes and continued collaboration among stakeholders. Dr. Vijay Yadav, Hon. Secretary, NISTI, delivered the Vote of Thanks, highlighting the collective effort behind the conference’s success.
