Textiles Ministry Launches ‘Haat On Wheels’ To Promote Indian Handlooms

As part of the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations, the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), launched the “Haat on Wheels” initiative and an Exclusive Handloom Expo at Handloom Haat, Janpath. Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh inaugurated the event, accompanied by MoS Pabitra Margherita and Secretary Textiles Neelam Shami Rao.

“Haat on Wheels” is a mobile retail initiative that will showcase 116 unique weaves from across India, promoting direct-to-consumer handloom sales in Delhi NCR. The vehicle will travel to public spaces, markets, art zones, and residential areas, taking high-quality, handmade products straight from artisans to urban consumers.

Speaking at the launch, Giriraj Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting India’s traditional weavers and boosting market access. “Handlooms are a vital part of India’s cultural identity and rural economy. The ‘Haat on Wheels’ bridges the gap between weavers and consumers, strengthening self-reliance and sustainable economic growth,” he said.

The event’s theme ‘My Handloom, My Pride; My Product, My Pride’, highlights India’s textile legacy and encourages awareness around sustainable fashion and local craftsmanship. The Handloom Expo, open till August 10 at Janpath, features regional products from master weavers, along with live weaving demonstrations, offering visitors an immersive cultural experience.

With a focus on innovation and outreach, the Ministry’s efforts aim to bring handloom heritage into the spotlight, empower artisans, and ensure India’s crafts thrive in modern and global markets.
