Tiruppur Hosiery Body Seeks Curbs On Bangla Garment Imports
The South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association (SIHMA) has called upon the central government to take measures in curbing apparel imports from Bangladesh.
Additionally, the association highlighted the need to impose restrictions on raw cotton exports once the new cotton season begins from October 1.
In a memorandum, AC Eswaran, President of SIHMA said around 40 percent of Tiruppur’s hosiery manufacturing units, which mainly serve the domestic market have shut due to a significant decline in orders.
“So, while Tiruppur hosiery manufacturing units are closing due to drop in orders, garment imports from Bangladesh have risen 15 times in the past six years, reaching Rs. 4,500 crore,” he added.
According to Eswaran, Bangladesh exports duty free garments to India and the garment industry in Bangladesh receives government subsidies, posing challenges for Tiruppur hosiery industries with higher production costs.
