TN Govt Nixes Rs 500 Cr Textile Project Near Kodiveri

Following widespread opposition from farmers, political parties and the public, the Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the permission granted to a private textile processing unit for its proposed Rs 500-crore expansion near Akkaraikodiveri village in Gobichettipalayam taluk.

The project, located near the Kodiveri anicut on the Bhavani river, faced strong resistance due to environmental concerns. Subi Thalapathi, President of the Kodiveri Dam-Bhavani River Irrigation Farmers Association, said the river supports over one crore people and irrigates more than three lakh acres in western Tamil Nadu. He warned that further industrial activity would aggravate existing pollution from untreated sewage and industrial waste.

Despite objections, the state’s Department of Environment and Climate Change had granted approval on November 26, 2024, through G.O. (3D) No. 9. In response, the farmers’ association renewed protests and submitted documentation of the company’s alleged regulatory violations over 15 years.

Former Minister and Gobichettipalayam MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan raised the matter in the Assembly, calling attention to potential environmental risks. On March 27, 2025, the association met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and submitted a detailed memorandum. The government subsequently promised a review.

Based on findings from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, the Environment Department cancelled the approval on June 10, 2025.
