TN Women’s Commission Reviews Women Workers’ Welfare In Tiruppur Textile Units
The Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women, A.S. Kumari, has completed a two-day inspection of textile and garment manufacturing units in Tiruppur to assess working conditions, workplace safety and the welfare of women employees.
During the visit, Kumari interacted with around 125 workers across two spinning mills and five garment factories. The units collectively employ more than 3,000 women.
The inspection covered employment records and statutory documents, while discussions with management focused on workplace practices, employee welfare and compliance with labour regulations.
One of the key areas examined during the inspection was compliance with legal safeguards for women workers, including provisions under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, or the PoSH Act.
Kumari found that some workers were not fully aware of the requirement for factories to have an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) to address complaints of sexual harassment at the workplace.
The Commission also examined the availability of mental health support and the living conditions of women workers.
According to the Commission’s preliminary assessment, the units inspected did not show evidence of coercive labour practices or systemic exploitation.
The Commission will now consolidate its findings from the two-day inspection and prepare a report for submission to the Tamil Nadu government.
The report is expected to include recommendations aimed at strengthening workplace safety, legal awareness and welfare measures for women employed in the textile and garment sector.
The proposed measures are intended to strengthen safeguards for women workers across Tiruppur, one of India’s major textile and garment manufacturing centres.
