US Cotton Growers Invited To Become Climate Smart

The US Cotton Trust Protocol has invited US cotton farmers to join its five-year ‘Climate Smart Cotton Program’.

The program aims to measure and improve the carbon footprint of the US cotton industry while building on the four pillars of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices.

Participating growers will receive technical and financial support as well as other benefits that can enhance their operations, profitability, and environmental stewardship.

Other goals include ensuring that US cotton farmers adopt CSA practices on 1.2 million acres, with the target to obtain 4.2 million bales of CSA over five years.

For this purpose, Cotton Protocol Trust intends to enroll 1,650 cotton farmers and if implemented successfully, would reduce CO2 emission by 1.14 million tons.

The Trust said approval would be granted on a first come first served basis and those whose application is approved will receive technical and financial support, among other benefits.

The other partners of the Climate Smart Cotton Programme include Cotton Council International, Cotton Incorporated, the Soil Health Institute, Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Agricenter International, Alabama A&M University, and North Carolina A&T State University.
