WWI Celebrates Handloom Day With Textiles Ministry

Whistling Woods International (WWI), India’s premier institute for Film, Communication & Creative Arts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles, celebrated National Handloom Day with an immersive showcase blending India’s textile heritage with contemporary design.
Hosted at the WWI campus, the event offered students a first-hand experience of handloom weaving, with master weavers from across India demonstrating techniques on century-old looms from spinning yarn to producing finished textiles. This rare display of craftsmanship gave aspiring designers a direct connection to traditional artistry.
“We chose to partner with Whistling Woods International because it bridges traditional artistry with cutting-edge design education,” said Hemant Gupta, Deputy Director, Designs, Weavers’ Service Centre. “By engaging with these passionate students, we are ensuring India’s handloom legacy remains relevant in today’s design world.”
The celebration also featured a live screening of the Hon’ble President of India’s National Handloom Day address, highlighting the craft’s cultural and economic significance.
A Handloom Fashion Showcase closed the event, with WWI Fashion Design students presenting contemporary silhouettes made from traditional fabrics, complemented by vibrant cultural performances.
“Every thread tells a story; every weave carries the soul of our nation’s heritage,” said Meghna Ghai Puri, President, WWI. “When young designers learn from master craftsmen, they become custodians of our cultural tapestry.”
The celebration reaffirmed WWI’s role in preserving and reinterpreting traditional Indian arts within a global design context.
