SGCCI Forms Textile Task Force To Boost Industry Growth

The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has established a Textile Task Force (TTF) for the first time, aiming to address industry-wide issues and unite various segments of the textile sector. The decision was made during a meeting on Wednesday, with the official announcement following on Thursday.

The TTF will include representatives from every section of the textile industry, ranging from fibre to garment, as well as machinery and infrastructure developers. Participants will include textile traders, spinners, processors, weavers, knitters, embroidery business owners, yarn traders, garment manufacturers and exporters.

Vijay Mevawala, President of SGCCI, emphasized the significance of the TTF in uniting entrepreneurs from different sectors. “The textile industry faces numerous challenges, and at times, there’s a lack of consensus among different segments. The TTF will provide a common platform for unified representation to relevant government departments at both the state and central levels,” Mevawala said.

The task force will play a pivotal role in contributing to the south Gujarat economy’s growth, projected to reach US$ 1.5 trillion by 2047 under NITI Aayog’s Growth Hub initiative. With Surat being a key textile hub, the TTF will focus on accelerating industry development and identifying areas requiring government support to transform Surat into a global textile centre.

S P Verma, former Additional Textile Commissioner, has been appointed as an advisor to the TTF, while former SGCCI President Ashish Gujarati will serve as Chairman. The task force will meet monthly and host a biannual ‘Textile Conclave,’ with the inaugural event scheduled for December.

The TTF will also prioritize the growth of the garment sector, skill development across the textile industry and the creation of a common facility centre in Surat.
