Vietnam, US Advance Toward Bilateral Trade Agreement In High-Level Talks

Vietnam and the United States have taken a significant step toward finalizing a reciprocal trade agreement, following a virtual ministerial-level meeting aimed at resolving key outstanding issues in the ongoing negotiations.

The online session brought together Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The discussion focused on creating a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade framework between the two countries.

In a constructive and cooperative atmosphere, the ministers addressed core areas of concern, including reciprocal tariff policies, market access for key Vietnamese exports, and the development of harmonized rules of origin suited to the complexities of modern global supply chains.

Minister Dien welcomed the US proposals and emphasized Vietnam’s expectation that the United States take into account its unique economic context, especially in sectors critical to Vietnamese exports. He underlined the importance of designing trade rules that are fair, transparent, and supportive of business growth on both sides.

US officials praised Vietnam’s proactive engagement and willingness to address unresolved issues. Secretary Lutnick and Representative Greer reaffirmed the US commitment to accelerating the negotiation process and working closely with Vietnam to achieve a sustainable, long-term agreement that benefits both economies.

Greer added that the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) would soon submit formal documents to facilitate the next phase of discussions, signalling clear intent to move the process forward efficiently.

The bilateral agreement, once concluded, is expected to strengthen economic ties, enhance supply chain resilience, and create new opportunities for trade and investment between Vietnam and the United States.
