Chinese Investment In Bangladesh Jumps 300%; Dhaka Eyes Deeper Economic Ties

Chinese investment in Bangladesh has surged 300%, underscoring Beijing’s growing role in the country’s economic landscape, Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin said on Friday. Speaking at the ‘Belt and Road Initiative in Bangladesh Exhibition’ at the Bashundhara Convention Centre, he stressed that enhanced collaboration with China could further accelerate Bangladesh’s growth trajectory.

“The joint experience and collaboration with China can propel Bangladesh forward,” Sheikh Bashir said, adding that Bangladesh must address its structural weaknesses while leveraging China’s expertise in production and packaging to strengthen its industrial base.

Despite being the world’s second-largest exporter of ready-made garments (RMG), Bangladesh continues to lag in broader industrial growth. The adviser flagged road safety and transport infrastructure as critical challenges, noting that the high incidence of accidents reflects an urgent need for upgrades. He called for increased cooperation with China to modernise the country’s transport systems.
