Arunachal Plans Rs 25-Crore Boost For Textile And Sericulture

Pema Khandu, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, has announced a Rs 25-crore package aimed at strengthening the state’s sericulture and textile sector while also inaugurating the Arunachal Fashion Week – The Artisans’ Movement at Naharlagun.
The initiative is intended to support local artisans and designers while promoting the region’s traditional weaving heritage. The funding will focus on expanding sericulture activities and improving opportunities for textile entrepreneurs, with the broader goal of integrating Arunachal’s craft traditions into larger national and international markets.
Speaking at the event, Khandu highlighted plans to establish an Arunachal Creative Economy Cell, which will provide end-to-end support for artists, designers and craft-based enterprises. The proposed platform is expected to help local talent access wider markets, connect with industry stakeholders and build stronger creative networks beyond the state.
Women artisans are expected to play a central role in this initiative, particularly through self-help groups operating under the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission. These groups have been instrumental in sustaining traditional textile practices while creating livelihood opportunities in rural communities.
The eight-day fashion and craft event marks five years of the artisans’ movement and showcases the region’s rich textile traditions alongside contemporary design interpretations. Featuring the work of more than 23 designers, the programme highlights the diversity of Arunachal’s weaving culture and reflects ongoing efforts to position indigenous textiles within the global fashion and craft ecosystem. The event is scheduled to conclude on March 21.
