Myanmar Explores Import Of Quality Cotton Seeds From India, Uzbekistan

The Myanmar Cotton and Cotton Products Merchants Association is strengthening efforts to improve cotton quality by exploring the import of superior cotton seeds from India and Uzbekistan.
During the fourth hybrid meeting held on March 12 at the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization, the association discussed sourcing long-staple, non-hybrid cotton and high-quality seeds suited to Myanmar’s climate and soil conditions with the International Federation of Business Intellectuals and Changemakers (IFBIC).
Officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Myanmar’s economic counsellors in Kolkata also participated in the discussions. Uzbekistan has expressed interest in supplying pest-free, high-yielding cotton varieties.
The meeting also reviewed the standards and characteristics of Myanmar’s 2/40 and 2/80 cotton varieties. Meanwhile, industry bodies have submitted a list of premium cotton varieties to the relevant authorities for further consideration.
Highlighting the significant price gap between premium and non-premium cotton, the association emphasized the need for farmers to adopt high-quality seeds to ensure better yields and profitability. It also urged cotton ginners to maintain strict quality control through clean and efficient operations.
The association continues to work closely with stakeholders to enhance cotton quality, boost output and secure better market prices.
