Finishing For The First Touch: How HYS Industries And A.T.E. Are Elevating Bedding Performance Through Advanced Calendaring

HYS Industries, a relatively new entrant in the textile finishing business, is a part of the parent group Raghuvir Exim, which has been associated with A.T.E. for many years. In an exclusive interaction with Henry Dsouza, Associate Editor of Textile Insights, Hardik Sunil Agarwal, Director of HYS Industries, shares insights into how the company is leveraging high-end calendaring solutions, sustainability-driven manufacturing and digital transformation to strengthen its positioning in premium export markets.
In the global home textiles market, where differentiation is increasingly defined by subtle product attributes rather than price alone, the importance of finishing has come sharply into focus. Today, the buying decision is often made at first touch, when the consumer evaluates softness, appearance and overall feel in-store. Recognizing this shift, HYS Industries has partnered closely with A.T.E. Group to deploy advanced European calendaring technology, transforming finishing into a strategic lever for market competitiveness.
HYS Industries, part of Raghuvir Exim Ltd, operates within a legacy of textile manufacturing that dates back to 1968. From its origins as a trading business, the group has evolved into a fully integrated, export-oriented home textile manufacturer supplying premium bedding products across the United States, Europe, Australia and other developed markets. With a combined processing capacity of nearly 5 lakh metres per day across its facilities, the company has built scale, but Agarwal points out that scale alone is no longer enough.
Consumer behaviour in the bedding segment has undergone a visible transformation. Products are no longer concealed in plastic packaging, instead they are presented in fabric-based formats, allowing customers to directly engage with the material. “The customer today is touching and comparing multiple products before making a decision. If the hand feel is not right at that moment, the sale doesn’t happen,” Agarwal explains. This shift has elevated finishing, particularly calendaring from a backend process to a decisive factor in product selection.
A key challenge in cotton bed linen lies in its inherent behaviour, the fabric tends to improve in softness after multiple washes. However, this delayed performance is incompatible with modern retail expectations. Through its engagement with A.T.E. Group, HYS Industries identified this gap as a critical point of intervention. Advanced calendaring solutions, particularly those based on Guarneri Nipco-L technology, were introduced to impart immediate mechanical softness and enhanced surface lustre, ensuring the product meets consumer expectations at the first point of contact. “Even if cotton improves after washing, no customer will buy a product that doesn’t feel good before the first wash. That’s where calendaring becomes essential,” Agarwal notes.
The collaboration with A.T.E. was instrumental not only in identifying the right technology but also in evaluating long-term investment implications. Faced with the choice between Chinese and European calendaring systems, HYS Industries relied on A.T.E.’s technical expertise to assess performance, productivity and lifecycle value. While European machines came at a significantly higher upfront cost, sometimes nearly ten times that of standard alternatives, the advantages in output quality, speed and durability proved decisive. A trial installation, facilitated through A.T.E., allowed HYS to validate these benefits under real production conditions. The results led to a bold scale-up decision, the installation of three Guarneri Nipco-L calendars in a single phase.
The impact of this upgrade has been substantial. HYS Industries reports a marked improvement in fabric softness and surface lustre, the two attributes that directly influence customer preference in retail environments. The enhanced finishing has also strengthened consistency and edge-to-edge uniformity, reducing variability and minimizing customer complaints. While these improvements do not necessarily translate into a price premium, they significantly improve product sell-through in a saturated market. “We don’t get a higher price, but the product sells more easily. In today’s market, that’s what matters, we are taking business from competitors,” Agarwal emphasizes.
From a strategic standpoint, the investment reflects a broader philosophy of building a future-ready manufacturing ecosystem. HYS Industries has developed a carbon-neutral facility where sustainability is deeply embedded across operations. The company operates advanced zero liquid discharge systems using distillation technology, relies heavily on solar energy and utilizes biomass generated from agro-waste for thermal processes. Even by-products such as fly ash are converted into construction materials, reinforcing a closed-loop approach to manufacturing. According to Agarwal, sustainability now forms the first point of engagement with global buyers, even before discussions on capacity or machinery.
The partnership with A.T.E. also extended beyond technology selection into execution and commissioning. Close coordination during installation ensured smooth integration of the new systems into HYS’s high-capacity processing environment. Given the scale of operations of over 3.5 lakh metres per day in a single facility, the reliability and precision of finishing equipment were critical. The deployed calendaring systems now handle a significant portion of the finishing load, delivering consistent output aligned with global quality expectations.
In parallel, HYS Industries is investing in digital transformation, developing AI-enabled ERP systems to automate order processing, procurement and production workflows. The goal is to reduce manual intervention and enable faster, error-free execution, while also leveraging AI for product visualization and content creation. These initiatives reflect a broader shift toward smarter manufacturing, where efficiency and responsiveness are as important as scale.
Looking at the global landscape, Agarwal sees India entering a phase of structural advantage. Rising costs in competing countries, changing trade dynamics and evolving compliance requirements are creating new opportunities for Indian exporters. At the same time, the market remains volatile, influenced by geopolitical tensions, tariff changes and logistics disruptions. “Earlier, business was stable. Today, everything is dynamic. The ability to adapt quickly is critical,” Agarwal observes.
Despite these challenges, HYS Industries remains optimistic, with strong growth projections and plans for further capacity expansion. The company’s experience highlights a key industry insight in a crowded and competitive market: advanced finishing technologies backed by the right technical partners can become a decisive differentiator.
As Agarwal concludes, “If the hand feel is right, the product will sell. That is where technology gives us the edge.”
