Maharashtra Extends Textile Subsidy Registration Deadline

Maharashtra government has extended by three months the deadline for textile units to register on the online portal introduced by the state textile commissionerate for availing power subsidy benefits.

The earlier six-month registration deadline ended on April 27. However, low participation from textile operators prompted the government to grant additional time for compliance.

According to industry estimates, only around 9,500 textile units had completed registration out of nearly 55,000 textile units operating across Maharashtra, one of India’s largest textile manufacturing hubs. Most registrations reportedly came from cooperative sector units.

Industry associations had earlier requested the government to simplify the online registration process, particularly after the revised registration form was made available only on April 7, leaving limited time before the original deadline.

In a government resolution issued on Wednesday, authorities stated that textile units failing to register on the portal within the extended timeline would automatically lose eligibility for the state’s electricity subsidy scheme.

The textile industry in Maharashtra receives significant support through subsidised power tariffs, with the state covering nearly 40 per cent of electricity costs. The annual subsidy support is estimated at around Rs 1,800 crore.

The online registration mechanism was introduced to improve transparency, prevent subsidy leakages and ensure benefits are provided only to eligible textile units. However, response from the industry has remained slower than expected.
