India, Sweden Elevate Ties To Strategic Partnership

India and Sweden have elevated their bilateral relationship to a full Strategic Partnership following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Gothenburg on May 17–18, 2026. The two countries also adopted a Joint Action Plan for 2026–2030 aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, technology, innovation, sustainability and defence.

A key outcome of the visit was the launch of the Sweden–India Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC), which will promote collaboration in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technologies, cybersecurity and next-generation digital infrastructure.

The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for Indian industries, including textiles and apparel, through stronger innovation ecosystems, sustainability initiatives and enhanced access to European markets.

The two nations also agreed to deepen cooperation in green technologies, advanced manufacturing, research and resilient supply chains. Sweden’s position as a leading innovation hub within Europe is expected to support India’s broader engagement with the European Union following the conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement earlier this year.

Industry observers believe the strengthened India-Sweden partnership will help accelerate technology adoption, sustainable industrial development and long-term investment opportunities across multiple sectors, including manufacturing and textiles.
