Archroma Adopts Zero Liquid Discharge Solution At Mahachai Plant

Archroma has successfully implemented a state-of-the-art Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system at its Mahachai plant in Thailand, designed and built by Gradiant. The solution enables 90-95% wastewater recovery for reuse and extracts valuable minerals for industrial applications, advancing water circularity in textile dye production.

Located in a water-stressed region near Bangkok, the plant now serves as a model for sustainable water management, significantly reducing reliance on local water supplies. “We believe in reducing water use in production and home laundering. Our goal is to ensure effective water conservation, especially in stressed areas,” said Dhirendra Gautam, VP Global Marketing and Strategy, Archroma.

Gradiant’s Counterflow Reverse Osmosis (CFRO) technology was selected for its high efficiency and minimal energy consumption. Additionally, Free Radical Oxidation (FRO) removes colour and organics, ensuring safe discharge and compliance with environmental regulations. The system also recovers concentrated brine, repurposed within dyeing or supplied for industrial applications.

“This partnership with Archroma highlights how advanced water treatment can drive sustainability without compromising efficiency,” said Prakash Govindan, COO, Gradiant.

With Thailand facing increasing water stress, the ZLD solution strengthens Archroma’s long-term operational resilience. This investment aligns with its broader sustainability goals, extending to global initiatives, including its Sustainable Effluent Treatment (SET) plant in Pakistan.
