BGMEA Seeks Faster Customs Services To Boost Garment Exports

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to ensure faster, hassle-free Customs, VAT, and bond-related services to support the country’s US$ 47-billion readymade garment (RMG) sector.
The appeal was made at a meeting on Wednesday between BGMEA leaders, led by first Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, and NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan at the Chattogram Custom House.
Industry leaders flagged delays in clearing imported raw materials, machinery and equipment as major hurdles that increase production costs and disrupt supply chains. They warned that Bangladesh risks losing competitiveness at a time when export markets have shrunk, including in its two largest destinations, and political instability has already disrupted production since July.
“Unless the situation improves, there could be a reduction in purchase orders for the upcoming season,” Nazrul said.
BGMEA Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury added that modernisation and simplification of Customs processes are critical to maintaining global competitiveness as international buyers demand shorter lead times. “If we face delays due to Customs-related issues, we risk losing our competitive edge,” he said.
NBR Chairman Khan assured industry leaders that the tax authority would work to resolve the issues. Senior BGMEA directors and former vice presidents, along with top officials from the Chattogram Custom House, were present at the meeting.
