Chinese Garment Exports Up 1.1% In First Quarter Of 2024

In the first quarter of 2024, China’s exports of apparels totalled US $33.82 billion, a year-on-year increase of 1.1 percent.

“While, garment exports in March 2024 amounted to $10.43 billion, down 17.9 percent from a year ago month,” data from Chinese Customs informed

However, when compared with March 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic started; apparel exports in March 2024 are still at a historically high level, with an increase of 25.1 percent over March 2019.

It is important to note here that Chinese clothing exports from January to February increased by 12.7 percent year-on-year due to a low base in the same period last year.

Between January and March 2024, knitted garment exports were $15.06 billion, a year-on-year hike of 3.2 percent, while woven clothing exports stood at $14.55 billion, up 0.6 percent.

In the first three months of ongoing year, China’s clothing import market share in the United States was 23%, an increase of 2.2 percentage points year-on-year.

The country’s share in the EU was 27.4 percent, a rise of 0.6 percentage points. However, its share in Japan which was 47.1 percent declined 1.6 percentage points from a year ago quarter.
