Dr Chidambaram Bose, A Pioneer Of Indian Texturising And A Pillar Of TAI, Passes Away
The Indian textile industry has lost one of its respected technologists, leaders and mentors with the passing of Dr Chidambaram Bose, Trustee and President Emeritus of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai unit, on 7 September 2026. He was 76.
Dr Bose dedicated several decades to the advancement of textile technology and the professional development of the industry. His association with TAI Mumbai was particularly distinguished. He served as Vice President from 2003 to 2005 and President from 2005 to 2017, while also serving as a Trustee since 2010. His leadership played an important role in strengthening the Mumbai unit, including his significant contribution to the redevelopment of Santosh building.
TAI recognised his distinguished service with the Hon. FTA and Service Gold Medal, followed by the Distinguished Service Award in 2026 for his exemplary contribution to the Association.
Dr Bose was widely regarded as a pioneer of texturising in India. He organised five international seminars on texturising at Silvassa, the first of their kind in India, bringing global technological knowledge and exposure to the Indian texturising industry.
A qualified textile technologist with B. Tech. and M. Tech. in Textiles, F.I.E. and Chartered Engineer (FTA) qualifications, he began his career with Hindon River Mills (DCM) and subsequently worked with Sir Padampat Research Centre, J.K. Synthetics, Urvi Chemicals and Nirlon Synthetics.
A major chapter of his career was with Reliance Industries Ltd, where he served as Senior Vice President from 1995 to 2009. He played a pivotal role in developing its state-of-the-art texturising facility at Silvassa and helped establish it as a benchmark for yarn quality, productivity, cost efficiency and responsible manufacturing.
Following Reliance’s acquisition of Trevira, Germany, Dr Bose led technical operations across Germany, Denmark and Poland. He also played a key role in the acquisition and record-time transfer of UNIFI Ireland’s texturising and polyester facilities to India.
His pioneering work began in 1976 with the development of air texturising technology in India, including machines and process parameters for improved yarn quality. His technical contributions resulted in patents covering air texturising machines and processes, air-textured blended filament yarns and nylon coloration during spinning.
Beyond his technical achievements, Dr Bose will be remembered for his humility, accessibility, kindness and willingness to guide others. For generations of textile professionals, he was not only a distinguished technologist but also a mentor and friend.
A condolence meeting was held at the TAI Mumbai unit office on 11 September 2026, where members and well-wishers paid tribute to his remarkable life and contribution.
Dr Bose leaves behind a lasting legacy in textile technology, professional service, institution-building and mentorship. His contribution to TAI and the Indian textile industry will remain remembered with gratitude and respect.
