EU Garment Imports Drop 7.62% in Jan-April 2023

European Union import of garments declined 7.62 percent year on year to US $29.83 billion in the first four months of the current year.

“Imports in quantity terms between January and April 2023 plunged lower at 15.45% from a year ago period,” data from Eurostat revealed.

Only apparel imports from India and Vietnam recorded positive growth in the period under consideration, while the rest among EU top ten clothing importing countries declined.

EU’s imports from India and Vietnam have increased by 0.45 percent and 3.41 percent respectively, in value terms. But in terms of quantity, EU’s import from the both countries showed 8.17 percent and 7.26% percent drop, respectively.

The region’s apparel import from Bangladesh fell 6.25 percent year on year in value terms, while quantity wise, they declined 12.48 percent during the abovementioned period.

EUs import from China dipped 17.07 percent in dollar value and 21.05 percent in quantity, while those from Turkey, the third largest garment sourcing destination were down 13.68 percent in value term and 24.66 percent quantity-wise.

Its import from the other top sourcing destinations like Cambodia, Pakistan, Morocco, Sri Lanka and Indonesia fell 5.59 percent, 7.52 percent, 16.61 percent, 17.16 percent and 7.99 percent respectively, in value terms.
