Evonik And AMSilk Expand Partnership To Scale Sustainable Silk Proteins

Evonik and AMSilk have extended their collaboration with a long-term agreement to produce sustainable silk proteins at industrial scale. Building on their 2023 partnership, the companies have commissioned a dedicated manufacturing line at Evonik’s biotech hub in Slovakia.

The facility, powered by renewable energy and equipped with advanced fermentation infrastructure, will deliver several tonnes of AMSilk’s high-performance silk proteins monthly. Designed to meet industrial quality standards, the line enables AMSilk to enter its next growth phase while ensuring reliable supply for customers.

“Our collaboration with AMSilk shows how we can shape the future of materials through biotechnology. By scaling production of sustainable silk proteins, we are expanding our precision biosolutions portfolio and creating transformative solutions,” said Guido Skudlarek, Head of Evonik’s Health Care business line.

AMSilk will process the protein powder into yarns for premium fashion and automotive interiors. The biomaterials are vegan, biodegradable, plant-based, and leave no microplastics at the end of their lifecycle. Targeting a €16 billion serviceable market within the €26 billion global protein fibre sector, AMSilk aims to provide scalable alternatives to silk, cashmere and merino.

Ctibor Kohutovic, AMSilk’s Chief Production Officer, stated: “This specialized line increases output, improves efficiency and reduces unit costs, laying the foundation for growth and customer supply security.”

The partnership highlights Evonik’s commitment to expanding its biosolutions portfolio and the broader role of biotechnology in delivering sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials.
