Heimtextil Takes Centre Stage At Milan Design Week

Textile interior design reaches a new creative zenith as Heimtextil, the world’s leading trade fair for home and contract textiles, makes its mark at Milan Design Week. Following its acclaimed January debut in Frankfurt, star designer Patricia Urquiola’s immersive installation ‘among-us’ continues its narrative in Milan, spotlighting the vital role of textiles in holistic, contemporary design.

At the heart of this showcase are two striking creations designed exclusively for Heimtextil—‘Gruuvelot’ and ‘Mushmonster’—now making their Milan premiere. Developed in collaboration with Moroso, these unique textile sculptures are showcased within Alchemica, Elle Decor Italia’s signature installation at Palazzo Bovara.

The ‘Gruuvelot’ sofa, with its sinuous form and tactile volumes, embodies a dynamic seating ecosystem that morphs to its environment and adapts to the human body. Meanwhile, the padded sculpture ‘Mushmonster’, inspired by the biomorphic shape of a giant mushroom, symbolises continuous transformation. Filled with a sustainable material and clad in an innovative textile—created using a water-based, CO₂-saving digital printing process—Mushmonster bridges the gap between sustainability and design excellence.

Both pieces were first revealed as part of Urquiola’s ‘among-us’ installation at Heimtextil 2025 in Frankfurt, which envisioned the future of interior spaces as tactile, sensorial and sustainable environments. There, they encouraged visitors to engage, pause and reimagine the role of textiles in everyday living.

“I’m thrilled to bring ‘Gruuvelot’ and ‘Mushmonster’ from Heimtextil to Alchemica, where they become part of an alchemical narrative,” says Patricia Urquiola, Architect and Designer. “The installation explores the home as a space of transformation—reflecting experimentation, opposites and evolving life stages.”

At Milan Design Week, ‘Gruuvelot’ is featured in a reflective, light-filled room symbolising purification, while ‘Mushmonster’ finds its place in an indoor garden, surrounded by cyclical, biomorphic elements. Together, they blend into a story of transformation, seamlessly integrating form, function and emotion.

The successful collaboration with Urquiola continues into Heimtextil 2026, to be held from 13 to 16 January in Frankfurt. She will present a brand-new design showcase—a further evolution of ‘among-us’. This next chapter promises to push boundaries, combining tactile installations with digital projections, acoustic elements, and immersive storytelling to reimagine how interiors interact with the senses.

With its forward-thinking partnerships and commitment to sustainability, Heimtextil continues to serve as a pivotal platform for the future of textile-based interior design.
