Lenzing Launches Three-Tier Fiber System For Next-Gen Protective Wear

Lenzing Group has introduced a new three-tier cellulosic fiber portfolio for protective wear, marking a major expansion of its flame-resistant (FR) solutions portfolio. Branded as Lenzing Solutions for Protective Wear, the integrated system combines LENZING FR fibers and TENCEL Lyocell fibers to offer tailored solutions across different levels of protection.

The newly launched portfolio is structured into three distinct tiers Inherent, Hybrid and FR-finished making it the first integrated cellulosic system designed to support a wide range of protective wear applications. The inherent protection tier, led by LENZING™ FR fibers, delivers permanent flame resistance built directly into the fiber. Hybrid solutions combine TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers with modacrylic for enhanced comfort and performance, while FR-finished options offer cost-effective protection for industrial applications.

The launch reflects Lenzing’s continued focus on innovation in protective textiles, building on its legacy of developing inherently flame-resistant cellulosic fibers since 1977. The company aims to address the evolving needs of industries such as firefighting, oil and gas, utilities, and metalworking, where varying levels of protection, comfort, and durability are required.

Independent testing has shown that garments made with LENZING™ FR fibers can significantly reduce heat stress. Under controlled conditions, protective clothing incorporating these fibers demonstrated a notably lower increase in core body temperature compared to conventional FR-treated cotton and other common blends. This translates into improved wearer comfort and the ability to sustain physical performance for longer durations.

Sustainability is a key component of the new portfolio. The fibers are derived from certified or controlled wood sources and are certified under recognised environmental standards, including the EU Ecolabel. Additionally, dope-dyed LENZING™ FR fibers can reduce energy and water consumption by up to 50% and lower carbon emissions by up to 60% compared to conventional dyeing processes.

The portfolio was first introduced in the Asia-Pacific region at CIOSH Shanghai and will be showcased globally at Techtextil Frankfurt from April 21 to 24, where Lenzing will present its solutions to a broader international audience.

“For too long, the protective wear industry has relied on a one-size-fits-all fiber approach, yet different applications require fundamentally different solutions,” said Alexander Gstettner. “With increasing regulatory pressures and more demanding working environments, there is a clear need for a structured approach. This portfolio brings together decades of expertise with three distinct fiber tiers, each designed to meet specific performance and protection requirements.”

With the global personal protective equipment market projected to grow significantly in the coming years, Lenzing’s latest offering is positioned to support manufacturers in delivering high-performance, sustainable and application-specific protective wear solutions.
