Lenzing Publishes 2024 Annual and Sustainability Report, Titled ‘Activate Transformation Here’

Lenzing Group, a leading provider of regenerated cellulose fibers for the textile and nonwoven industries, has released its 2024 Annual and Sustainability Report. Titled “Activate Transformation Here,” the report outlines Lenzing’s measurable progress in sustainability and climate goals and sets a strong example of ecological, social, and economic success.

For the first time, Lenzing’s consolidated non-financial statement complies with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and reflects an updated double materiality analysis conducted in collaboration with stakeholders. Key material topics include climate and energy, water and pollution, biodiversity, circular economy, responsible wood procurement, sustainable innovations, human rights, business ethics, and transparency.

Advancing Towards Net Zero
Lenzing updated its climate targets in 2024 to align with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) reviewed and confirmed these targets, making Lenzing the only regenerated cellulose fiber producer with a verified science-based net-zero target.

To achieve these targets, Lenzing has implemented a climate action plan, investing over EUR 200 million to modernize production sites in China and Indonesia. The company also commissioned two gas turbines at its Chinese site to transition from coal to natural gas. Since 2017, Lenzing has reduced its specific greenhouse gas emissions by 41% and remains on track to meet its climate goals.

Focus on Sustainable Innovations
Lenzing introduced several innovative solutions in 2024, including hydrophobic cellulose fibers for sustainable nonwovens and a waterless dyeing technology developed with Exponent Envirotech, reducing water and dye consumption by 95% and 40%, respectively.

Collaborations with Recyc Leather led to the development of new shoe materials made from TENCEL™ Lyocell and recycled leather fibers, offering lower environmental impact. The “Glacial Threads” project, which uses biodegradable LENZING™ fibers for geotextiles to protect glaciers, won the “Biodiversity and Water Award” at the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards 2024 in Milan.

Lenzing also launched the CELLFIL project in 2024, co-financed by the EU with EUR 6.9 million, to scale lyocell filament production. Its partnership with Swedish pulp producer Södra, supported by a EUR 10 million EU grant, continues to develop new processes for textile recycling.

Industry Recognition
Lenzing’s sustainability leadership earned top ratings from industry bodies. CDP awarded Lenzing an “A-List” rating in the “Climate Change” category for the fourth consecutive year. The company also received an “A-” for “Forests” and a “B” for “Water Security.” EcoVadis awarded Lenzing platinum status for the fourth year, placing it among the top 1% of companies globally. Lenzing also achieved first place in the “Hot Button Ranking” by Canopy for sustainable sourcing and transparency.
