Levi’s Expands BioBlack Pigment Use To Mainstream Denim

Nature Coatings, the biochemical innovator transforming wood waste into high-performance black pigments, has announced that Levi’s has expanded the use of its BioBlack pigment from niche sustainable lines into mainstream denim collections.
The move marks a significant milestone for BioBlack, highlighting its scalability and reinforcing its role as a leading sustainable alternative to conventional carbon-based pigments.
Levi’s was an early adopter in 2023, integrating BioBlack into its Wellthread line to showcase how the pigment could eliminate toxic substances and reduce harmful emissions without compromising quality. That pilot laid the foundation for today’s broader rollout.
“Levi’s early belief and implementation of BioBlack was pivotal in demonstrating that sustainable solutions can perform at the highest industry standards,” said Jane Palmer, CEO of Nature Coatings. “This expansion to mainstream lines validates our vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future in fashion.”
The pigment, which recently achieved Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, will initially debut in Levi’s UK market before expanding to the U.S. and other global regions. Current Levi’s styles featuring BioBlack include:
- 567 Relaxed Flare
- 578 Baggy
- Highland Park Jacket
“By embracing BioBlack in its mainstream denim lines, Levi’s is showing the industry that sustainability and style can go hand in hand,” added Ryan Cheng, Chief Revenue Officer, Nature Coatings.
