Mahlo Marks 80 Years Of Innovation And Global Growth

Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG, a global leader in measurement and control technology, is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking a journey from a post-war workshop to a world-renowned engineering company. Founded in 1945 by Dr. Heinz Mahlo, the company began by producing radio receivers before pivoting to the textile industry, where it developed the world’s first automatic weft straightener in 1958, a breakthrough that laid the foundation for modern fabric straightening systems.

Over the decades, Mahlo expanded into the nonwoven, paper and plastics industries, establishing subsidiaries in the USA, Italy, Belgium and China, along with a global network of service partners. Under the leadership of CEO Rainer Mestermann since 2011, Mahlo has diversified its offerings, notably with the Qualiscan QMS web measurement system, strengthening its presence beyond textiles and becoming known for its broad in-house sensor portfolio.

Despite current geopolitical and economic challenges, Mahlo remains resilient, with an export share of around 80%. The company credits its longevity to continuous innovation, a committed workforce, and strong family-led values. “Staying successful over eight decades requires vision, reliability, and the dedication of many brilliant minds,” said Mestermann.

Mahlo remains firmly rooted in Saal an der Donau, where all systems are developed and produced. As one of the largest training employers in the Kelheim region, Mahlo invests heavily in cultivating young talent. Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo, grandson of the founder, and his wife Aura Greenwood-Mahlo continue to lead the company with a generational outlook focused on sustainability and responsibility.

“Dr. Heinz Mahlo was a pioneer who believed in solving technical challenges with purpose. We’re proud to carry that legacy forward; innovation with responsibility is still our guiding principle,” said Ralph Greenwood-Mahlo.
