Montane: Moving Towards A PFAS-Free Future

Montane Materials explores the rapid rise of PFAS technology and the shift towards alternatives to these increasingly controversial “forever chemicals.”

Occasionally, industry breakthroughs lead to transformative technologies that revolutionize product manufacturing. Such technologies, prized for their exceptional attributes, become ubiquitous across various applications. Imagine a technology that boasts chemical and thermal stability, withstands diverse processes and exhibits outstanding durability. With incredibly low surface tension and friction, it repels water, oil, grease, stains and solvents, making its end-use applications limited only by imagination.

PFAS (Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) is a technology that has been used for over 70 years in a multitude of applications. From non-stick cookware to waterproof membranes, PFAS has been integral to various products including carpets, furniture, manufacturing lubricants, cosmetics, medical implants, and more. The technology’s defining feature is the strong carbon-fluorine bond, which gives PFAS its durability and environmental persistence, earning it the moniker “forever chemicals.”

However, due to the long-term health risks and environmental persistence associated with PFAS, stringent restrictions and regulations are being imposed on these chemicals. The shift away from PFAS affects outdoor gear, including garments, packs and equipments. The industry is now focused on developing and adopting less harmful chemical substitutes. Waterproof coatings and membranes are being re-engineered to eliminate PFAS use and avoid potential cross-contamination.

While PFAS-free alternatives are being introduced, they often lack the performance characteristics and durability of their predecessors. For instance, PFAS-free durable water repellents (DWRs) may offer good water repellency but fall short in stain and oil resistance. As a result, maintaining outdoor clothing will require more frequent washing to keep garments looking their best and performing optimally.

Montane is leading the way in this transition. Significant progress has been made towards PFAS-free technologies, with legwear, synthetic, down insulation and softshell categories already adopting PFAS-free DWRs. The upcoming spring-summer 2024 collection will feature the solution waterproof jacket and pants, marking Montane’s initial foray into PFAS-free waterproof garments. This transition will continue with the anticipated rollout of Gore-Tex’s new PFAS-free expanded Polyethylene (ePE) membrane technology in Autumn-Winter 2025. Montane aims to be entirely PFAS-free as soon as feasible, aligning with impending legislation.

Transitioning an entire industry is a complex process that requires careful planning and consideration. The introduction of new DWRs and their interaction with different textiles presents unique challenges and solutions. Montane acknowledges the need for radical industry changes and remains committed to understanding and mitigating its impact, striving to make meaningful strides towards a PFAS-free future.
