Odisha Plans Textile And Apparel Cluster At Former Spinning Mill Site

The Odisha government has unveiled plans to develop a modern textile and apparel manufacturing cluster at the site of the defunct Shree Sarala Weavers Cooperative Spinning Mill in Tirtol, Jagatsinghpur district, aiming to boost industrial activity and create employment opportunities in the region.
As part of the redevelopment initiative, the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has allocated ₹23 crore to the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts to facilitate the transfer of the mill property. The land will subsequently be incorporated into IDCO’s land bank for the establishment of the proposed industrial cluster.
Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Industries, Skill Development and Technical Education, said the project aligns with the state government’s efforts to strengthen Odisha’s textile and apparel sector while attracting fresh investments and generating jobs.
Established in 1982, the Shree Sarala Spinning Mill was once a key industrial unit in the Tirtol region. However, operations ceased following the devastating 1999 super cyclone, and the facility has remained closed for more than two decades.
At its peak, the mill employed around 1,200 workers and served as a major source of livelihood for local communities. The proposed redevelopment is expected to revive economic activity in the area, enhance the state’s manufacturing ecosystem and support the growth of Odisha’s textile industry.
