Prague Introduces Smart Textile Recycling With Rewards

To reduce textile waste and promote sustainable fashion, Prague has launched a smart textile recycling program that rewards residents for responsible disposal.

Launched in April, the initiative features 30 uniform collection bins across city waste sorting stations, equipped with tracking systems. It builds on a national mandate effective January 2025 requiring textile waste collection.

Residents earn credits through the city’s digital platform Eko-výzva by depositing used textiles, which can be redeemed for discounts at Genesis, a sustainable fashion partner. Over six tons of textiles were collected in the program’s first month.

Usable items are redirected for reuse, while damaged textiles are recycled. The optional delivery option also makes participation easier.

“Textiles make up over 2% of our waste, but much of it can be reused. We want to keep these resources out of landfills,” said Deputy Mayor Jana Komrsková.

The initiative supports Prague’s climate goals by tackling fashion’s growing environmental impact, with textiles accounting for up to 10% of global carbon emissions.
