Microban Launches PFAS-Free Water-Resistant Finish Portfolio For Textiles

Microban International, a global leader in antimicrobial and product protection solutions, has announced the launch of H₂O Shield, a new line of PFAS- and PFOS-free water-resistant finishes for textiles. This marks Microban’s first venture beyond its core antimicrobial and odor control technologies, expanding its footprint in the functional finishes segment.

H₂O Shield addresses the growing demand for sustainable and high-performance alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including PFOS, which are widely used but increasingly restricted due to environmental and health concerns.

The portfolio features four customizable repellent solutions tailored to different performance and aesthetic needs:

• WR1000: For water repellency in low-touch items like shower curtains and tents.
• WR1001: Designed for wicking and performance wear including ski jackets and athletic apparel.
• WR1002: Prevents chalking and color shifts in dark fabrics such as hiking gear.
• WR1003: Enhances tear resistance and seam durability, ideal for backpacks and tents.

An optional pretreatment, WR-P, improves fabric compatibility, reduces agent usage by up to 20%, and boosts wash durability—maintaining effectiveness even after 20+ home laundering cycles.

H₂O Shield achieves AATCC TM22 spray repellency scores of 80 or higher, demonstrating high water resistance. The technology can be integrated with Microban’s existing antimicrobial and odor control solutions, allowing for multi-functional textile treatments.
