Primark Reduces Carbon Emissions, Boosts Sustainability Efforts
Primark has reported a 1.9% reduction in carbon emissions across its value chain since 2019, with an 11.6% decrease compared to last year. This marks the beginning of the retailer’s decarbonization programme decoupling from growth. The company is on track to meet its goal of halving carbon emissions by 2030, with a 21% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2024 compared to 2023.
Sustainability efforts include making 66% of products from recycled or sustainably sourced materials, and 3% of clothes are now circular by design. Primark also launched its Durability Framework to promote longer-lasting, more affordable clothing.
The Primark Cotton Project continues to train farmers in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan on regenerative agricultural practices. In 2024, 3,000 farmers completed the pilot programme, using biological alternatives to pesticides and adopting cover crops for better soil health.
In addition, Primark is addressing textile waste through partnerships with WRAP and the Circular Textiles Foundation. The retailer’s textile donation scheme and other initiatives support a circular business model.
Primark has also signed a legally binding agreement with the IndustriALL global union to support collective bargaining for workers in Cambodia, and invested in worker programmes across 21 initiatives globally.
To improve its environmental impact, Primark introduced green fuel alternatives for shipping, aiming for a 40% reduction in emissions, and is working toward eliminating single-use plastics by 2027. The company’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity includes the launch of adaptive clothing and local community donations across all its markets.
