SASMIRA Celebrates 75th Foundation Day With Amrit Mahotsav

The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA) celebrated its 75th Foundation Day, marking 75 years of excellence in textile research, education and industry development. Established in 1950, SASMIRA has played a pivotal role in advancing the man-made textile industry in India.

The grand event was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including Padma Vibhushan, Emeritus Professor Man Mohan Sharma, a renowned expert in chemical science, engineering, and technology, who served as the Chief Guest. Roop Rashi Mahapatra, Textile Commissioner, Government of India, attended as the Guest of Honour. Other key figures included Mihir R. Mehta, President of SASMIRA, Smita Yeole, Vice President, and Dr. Ashok Tiwari, Director General.

During her address, Roop Rashi Mahapatra emphasized the rapid global expansion of India’s textile industry, projecting a turnover of $300 billion by 2030. She also stressed the importance of attracting young talent to the sector, which is often overshadowed by careers in IT and computer science.

In his address, Emeritus Prof. Man Mohan Sharma lauded SASMIRA’s contributions to textile education, research and development in India. He suggested that SASMIRA expand its offerings by introducing a degree course in textiles to complement its existing diploma courses.

Mihir Mehta, President of SASMIRA, announced that the Amrit Mahotsav celebrations would continue throughout 2025, featuring various events, including public gatherings, conferences, competitions, exhibitions and a mega fashion show.

SASMIRA’s 75-year journey was also celebrated with the launch of a commemorative Coffee Table Book and a documentary film chronicling its legacy. The inauguration of a Heritage Wall further honoured the institution’s contributions to the Indian textile industry.

The Foundation Day ceremony also recognized former leaders of SASMIRA, including Maganlal Doshi (Former President), Sunil Mehta, and Ramesh Chandra Mehta (Former Council Members), for their invaluable contributions to the organization and the textile sector. Additionally, Prof. M.D. Teli, Former HoD of Textile Division, ICT, and Ullhas Nimkar, Chairman of NimkarTek, were felicitated for their significant contributions.

The event concluded with the ceremonial lamp lighting by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries, followed by the inauguration of the Heritage Wall, marking 75 years of SASMIRA’s transformative journey in the textile industry.
