Tamil Nadu To Review Textile Industry Demands, Says Minister R. Gandhi

Tamil Nadu Minister for Handlooms and Textiles R. Gandhi assured the textile and apparel industry that the state government will carefully examine all their demands and suggestions to strengthen the sector.

Addressing a meeting with industry stakeholders in Coimbatore on Wednesday, the minister said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin accords high priority to the textile and apparel sector, even amid the state’s current fiscal challenges. Gandhi also noted that the Centre is working on a relief package for exporters affected by U.S. tariffs.

Industry representatives from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Karur, Dindigul, and Erode urged the state to offer short-term financial assistance for exporters, reduce electricity tariffs, promote solar energy generation, and enhance subsidies for powerloom modernization. They also sought incentives for machinery purchases across the textile value chain, support for marine discharge of treated effluents, and aid for developing waterless textile processing technology.

Earlier in the day, the minister inaugurated a mini handloom park at Sirumugai, established at a cost of Rs 1.12 crore. The facility, equipped with 50 looms, aims to produce Kora and soft silk sarees and fabrics worth Rs 4 crore annually, providing a monthly income of Rs 18,000 to each weaver.

He also opened a mini textile park at Palladam, developed at Rs 4.5 crore with 50% government subsidy support. The park is expected to generate around 100 jobs and produce nearly 28 lakh metres of fabric annually.
