UP To Build Textile Park In Kashi To Boost Banarasi Sari Ecosystem

The Banarasi sari, woven in Varanasi, is an enduring symbol of Indian craftsmanship, cultural heritage and global appeal. To strengthen this historic handloom ecosystem and support weaver livelihoods, the Uttar Pradesh government is taking focused measures under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote traditional industries through modern infrastructure and market-led growth.

A state-of-the-art textile park will be established in Ramna, Kashi, and is targeted to be operational within one year. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared within 90 days with technical support from NITRA, and the project is aligned with Uttar Pradesh’s Technical Textile Policy. Land for the park has already been identified.

The upcoming facility will feature raw material and yarn banks, a Bunkar Service Centre, zari and embroidery units, dyeing and processing units, and dedicated infrastructure for design and innovation. R&D collaboration with NIFT and the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology is also planned to build technical capabilities. Parallel initiatives are underway to secure Silk Mark and GI certification for silk products to ensure authenticity and increase consumer trust.

Beyond production, the government is working to strengthen market linkages. A dedicated platform for Banarasi sari production and marketing will help reinforce provenance, traceability and brand value. The Trade Facilitation Centre in Varanasi is also promoting Banarasi saris and local crafts such as durries, thereby expanding domestic and international buyer outreach.

By integrating modern infrastructure with traditional skills, the textile park is expected to reinforce the Banarasi sari value chain, boost productivity and create sustainable employment opportunities for the weaving community. The initiative positions Varanasi as a major textile hub while supporting heritage preservation and steady economic growth.
