9th ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium Promotes Cultural Heritage
The 9th ASEAN Traditional Textiles Symposium (ATTS) is scheduled to take place at the Landmark Hotel in Vientiane from November 4-6, emphasizing the preservation and promotion of traditional textile practices and cultural heritage across the ASEAN region. Souvita Phaseuth, President of the Lao Handicraft Association, highlighted the symposium’s focus during a recent press conference.
The event will feature panel presentations, exhibitions, and group discussions led by local, regional, and international textile experts. Weavers, designers, researchers, scholars, museum professionals, and artisans from Southeast Asia will gather to share insights through research presentations, panel discussions, exhibitions, and demonstrations. Each ASEAN country will showcase traditional textiles, enriching the symposium with diverse cultural perspectives.
Initiated by the Traditional Textile Arts Society of Southeast Asia (TTASSEA), formerly ASEAN TTAC, ATTS aims to preserve traditional textiles through scientific approaches, conservation efforts, and educational initiatives. Since its inception in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2005, subsequent symposiums have been hosted every 2-3 years by ASEAN member countries including the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, and Indonesia.
In addition to scholarly discussions, experts will explore strategies for textile preservation and museum display, fostering appreciation and understanding of cultural heritage. The symposium also aligns with Visit Laos Year 2024, promoting tourism activities related to handicrafts under the theme “Crafts are the heart of tourism.”
Enthusiasts and stakeholders interested in traditional textiles and cultural heritage preservation are encouraged to participate in these enriching discussions and exhibitions.
