India’s Technical Textiles Sector To Surpass US$ 10 Billion Exports By 2030: Giriraj Singh

Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh, confidently projected that India’s technical textiles industry will surpass the US$ 10 billion mark by 2030. Speaking at the ‘Viksit Bharat- Technical Textiles for Sustainable Growth & Development’ conference in New Delhi, Singh highlighted the increasing role of man-made fibres and technical textiles in everyday life, both globally and within India.

During the event, Singh launched the Compendium of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) and presented certificates to 11 approved start-ups under the NTTM. He emphasized the government’s dedication to the sector through initiatives such as the National Technical Textiles Mission and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for MMF fabric, apparel and technical textiles.

Singh noted that 156 research projects have been sanctioned under NTTM, including those focused on carbon fibres and support for start-ups. He identified Meditech, especially hygiene products, as crucial for reaching the US$ 10 billion target and expressed confidence in India’s potential to lead in high-performance fibres for industries like aerospace and construction.

The conference, organized by the Ministry of Textiles in partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Indian Technical Textile Association (ITTA), featured discussions on various aspects of the technical textiles sector. Union Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, and Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, Rachna Shah, also addressed the industry’s progress and future opportunities.

Rachna Shah highlighted that while the global technical textiles market is valued at around $300 billion, India’s domestic market is at US$ 25 billion, with exports reaching US$ 2.6 billion. Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, stressed the need for investment in composites and high-performance fibres, noting the current dependence on imports.

The conference’s first day included panel discussions on employment, innovation, social impact and future trends in the technical textiles industry.
