Vishwa Sutra Puts Indian Handlooms Global At Femina Miss India

At the 61st edition of Femina Miss India in Bhubaneswar, Indian handloom heritage took centre stage through a unique presentation titled Vishwa Sutra – Weaves of India for the World. The collection was unveiled by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
This first-of-its-kind initiative brings together 30 traditional Indian handloom weaves each representing a different state and reinterprets them through design inspirations drawn from 30 countries. The collection blends indigenous craftsmanship with global aesthetics, creating a contemporary narrative that resonates with international fashion sensibilities.
By pairing iconic weaves with diverse cultural silhouettes, Vishwa Sutra offers a fresh perspective on India’s textile vocabulary. Notable interpretations include Odisha Ikat with Greek influences, Kanchipuram inspired by Norwegian minimalism, Muga silk with Egyptian elements, Patola reflecting Spanish flair and Banarasi reimagined through UAE-inspired designs.
The initiative aims to position Indian handlooms as globally relevant while preserving their authenticity. It highlights the enduring legacy of traditional weaving techniques that have been passed down through generations, forming a vital part of India’s cultural heritage.
Speaking at the event, Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), emphasized the sector’s role in sustaining cultural identity, supporting livelihoods and empowering women entrepreneurs. She reiterated the government’s vision of taking Indian textiles from Gaon to Global, aligning tradition with modern design and evolving market demands.
Vishwa Sutra reflects a broader push by the government to transform traditional industries into globally competitive sectors under initiatives like Vocal for Local and the 5F framework, Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign, strengthening India’s footprint in the global textile and fashion landscape.
