Lululemon Advances PFAS-Free Apparel Strategy, Tightens Chemical Compliance Framework

Lululemon Athletica has confirmed that its product portfolio is now free from PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), marking a significant step in aligning with tightening global regulations and evolving industry standards on chemical usage in textiles.

PFAS, long used in performance apparel for durable water repellency, are being phased out globally amid rising environmental and health concerns. The move places Lululemon among a growing cohort of brands accelerating the transition toward safer chemistry in textile manufacturing.

The company said it operates a stringent chemical management system anchored by its Restricted Substances List (RSL), in place since 2011 and updated annually in line with global regulatory frameworks and scientific developments.

For supply chain compliance, Lululemon mandates regular third-party testing across its vendor base, including screening for PFAS. The brand is also focused on mitigating risks of unintentional contamination through continuous monitoring, supplier engagement and collaboration with chemical experts.

From an industry standpoint, the shift away from PFAS is expected to further drive innovation in alternative finishing technologies, particularly in water repellency and performance coatings, areas critical to the outerwear and athleisure segments.
