KARL MAYER Unveils Textile Innovation Center

KARL MAYER has inaugurated its state-of-the-art Textile Innovation Center (TIC) at its headquarters in Obertshausen, marking a significant step in advancing collaborative, market-driven textile innovation. The four-day opening programme from April 21 to 24 culminated in a grand launch that attracted around 220 international guests, including customers, brands and industry partners from across the textile value chain.

The new facility underscores the company’s long-term commitment to the textile sector at a time when innovation, speed and application-driven development are becoming critical to global competitiveness. Welcoming attendees, Karl Josef Mayer emphasised the company’s belief in the future of textiles and its intent to invest in industry growth. “With the opening of our new Textile Innovation Center, we want to send a strong signal to the global textile industry that we believe in the value of textiles and are committed to investing in its future,” he said.

Echoing this vision, Lutz Wolf described the TIC as a milestone in the company’s strategic roadmap. “This is a place where ideas come to life—where collaboration, creativity and market-relevant solutions come together. Our goal is to create value through open exchange and close cooperation,” he noted.

The TIC is part of a broader global innovation network, with additional centres in China and Japan, each aligned to regional strengths while contributing to a shared knowledge ecosystem. The Obertshausen facility brings together a team of around 15 experts specialising in materials, processes, machine technologies and textile applications, offering end-to-end support from concept to industrialisation.

Spread across 5,000 square metres, the centre provides a fully integrated platform for rapid, application-oriented textile development. It combines warp knitting, warp preparation and technical textiles under one roof—an industry-first approach—supported by 14 advanced machines that enable prototyping and testing in real-time. This integrated setup allows customers and partners to accelerate innovation cycles and bring market-ready solutions to scale faster.

A key highlight of the facility is its interactive showroom, which showcases a wide spectrum of textile applications across segments such as fashion and apparel, sports textiles, footwear, home textiles and technical textiles. The curated display includes product developments, concept materials and trend-led innovations, offering insights into emerging market opportunities. Special focus during the launch was placed on next-generation workwear solutions, ranging from protective clothing to functional office wear.

The centre also houses an Inspiration Hub, featuring KARL MAYER’s extensive design archive built over nearly nine decades. This repository of textile expertise serves as a creative foundation for new developments, enabling designers and engineers to draw from historical innovation while shaping future applications.

Complementing the innovation ecosystem is the KARL MAYER Academy, which offers structured training programmes, workshops and hands-on learning modules tailored to industry professionals. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, ensuring that skill development keeps pace with technological advancements.

The inauguration of the Textile Innovation Center reflects a broader industry shift towards integrated, collaborative innovation models. By combining advanced machinery, technical expertise and cross-industry partnerships within a single environment, KARL MAYER is positioning the TIC as a pivotal platform for driving the next phase of textile development globally.
