Tata Chemicals Faces Environmental Review Post Gujarat HC Ruling

Tata Chemicals Ltd is set to undergo an environmental impact assessment following a Gujarat High Court ruling that dismissed the company’s claim over legacy wastewater channels linked to its Mithapur manufacturing facility.

The court has directed the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) to appoint independent experts to assess the environmental impact associated with the historical discharge channels and recommend appropriate remediation measures and compensation, with findings to be submitted within three months.

The case relates to open wastewater channels established prior to 1987, which were previously used to discharge industrial effluents into the sea. Tata Chemicals had challenged a 2006 district collector’s order rejecting its claim over the land associated with these channels.

In its regulatory filing, the company clarified that the disputed channels are no longer operational and have been replaced by a modern closed deep-sea wastewater discharge pipeline that complies with prevailing environmental norms.

Tata Chemicals stated that the ruling will have no impact on ongoing operations at its Mithapur facility. However, the financial implications remain uncertain and will depend on the outcome of the expert-led environmental assessment.

The development underscores the growing regulatory focus on environmental compliance and legacy industrial infrastructure, a critical issue for manufacturing sectors as sustainability standards continue to tighten across global supply chains.

The company said it is currently reviewing the court order and evaluating its next course of action while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining high environmental standards and protecting the regional ecosystem.
