Thailand Moving Towards Bio-Circular Green Textile Economy
A report of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) informed that Thailand is moving towards a bio-circular green textile economy.
UNEP released a report titled ‘Sustainable and circular textile value chains: Linkages with trade and trade policy’, in which it highlighted Thailand’s efforts.
UNEP pointed out the SE Asian country’s efforts in eliminating tariffs on clean technologies and implementing environmental standards for the textile industry.
According to the report, Thailand has eliminated import duties on wastewater treatment equipment and solar cells, which has significantly contributed to their affordability and widespread use.
The country has also implemented a series of environmental standards and regulations tailored to the manufacturing industry, including specific guidelines for textile factories.
These measures are designed to enhance energy efficiency, foster energy conservation, and minimise pollution, with specific technical regulations on the use of textile dyes.
The UN agency said that adoption of ecolabels is promoting sustainable practices, despite facing challenges.
The report added that more and more Thailand textile manufacturers are adopting ecolabels like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Green Label: Thailand, the EU Ecolabel, and the Bluesign standard.
“These certifications have significantly facilitated access to the global market for Thailand textile products,” UNDP observed.
