ABFRL And GIZ Unveil Pioneering Circularity Guidelines For Textile Industry

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd (ABFRL), in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), launched India’s first circularity guidelines for the textile and apparel industry at the Sankalp Bharat Summit 2024 in Varanasi. Titled “Stitching the Circle: A Roadmap for Circular Textiles & Apparel in India,” the comprehensive guide aims to transition the industry from a linear to a circular economy model.

The launch marks the culmination of a transformative three-year partnership between ABFRL and GIZ, focusing on sustainability, resource efficiency and waste reduction in the textile sector. Initiatives during this collaboration include a baseline survey assessing circularity, the Circularity Innovation Challenge 2023, and the training programme “Decoding Circularity Together.” Pilot projects integrating circular solutions into the supply chain further demonstrate the roadmap’s actionable strategies.

The guidelines emphasize the 6R Approach—Redesign, Reduce, Reuse, Remanufacture, Recycle, Regenerate—offering a framework to enhance resource efficiency. They also outline Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure progress and align with global sustainability certifications.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to building a sustainable textile ecosystem,” said Ashish Dikshit, Managing Director, ABFRL. Dr Naresh Tyagi, Chief Sustainability Officer, highlighted the guidelines’ potential to benefit both the environment and society, while GIZ Senior Advisor Meghana Kshirsagar emphasized the collaboration’s role in advancing resource efficiency.

Through case studies and best practices, the guidelines inspire stakeholders across the value chain, setting a benchmark for circularity in India’s textile sector and paving the way for sustainable growth.
