Achieving 70% Female Workforce Participation By 2047 Key To Viksit Bharat: Sumita Dawra

At the Women in Services Sector CII Dialogue 2025, Sumita Dawra, Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment, emphasized that achieving 70% female workforce participation by 2047 is pivotal for a Viksit Bharat, unlocking economic potential and fostering national growth.

Dawra noted that India’s female labour force participation has risen from 23% in 2017-18 to approximately 42% in 2023-24, with more women entering agriculture, manufacturing and services. However, challenges such as workplace biases, wage disparities, job security and leadership barriers persist. She called for mentorship programmes, safe workspaces and greater participation in STEM, entrepreneurship and startups to empower women economically.

Other distinguished speakers included Maharani Shailja Katoch, who stressed the role of women as agents of change and emphasized preserving cultural heritage through digital innovation. Tarana Sawhney, Advisor, CII Task Force on Art & Culture, highlighted the contributions of women in India’s art sector while advocating for equal pay and institutional support.

Renowned fashion designer Rina Dhaka underscored the significance of women in fashion and entrepreneurship, calling for skill-building initiatives, financial support and ethical fashion practices to enhance opportunities for women-led businesses.

The event, organized by CII, set the stage for International Women’s Day celebrations, reinforcing the collective vision of empowering women across industries.
